Self-Leadership | The Foundation for Great Leadership

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

The year 2020 was an unprecedented year full of highs and lows and full of stark realizations in all aspects of life. In the professional arena, 2020, more than any other year, has made it clear that nothing is certain or unchangeable. Things could change rapidly by 180 degrees. The year has made it clear that with rapid changes, survival of the fittest is now survival of the most resilient, survival of the most agile and survival of the most adaptive. Leaders now more than ever are tasked with leading their careers, leading their people and ensuring the organization remains relevant, thrives and is future-ready.

“Survival of the fittest is now survival of the most resilient, survival of the most agile and survival of the most adaptive.

To effectively do this, leaders should continue to learn and hone their leadership skills. While organization should and can manage the learning path for their employees, leaders, mangers, and aspiring professionals ought to take ownership of their leadership learning and career advancement. One approach to achieving this is to start the journey to leading oneself.

Self-leadership is the foundation of great leadership and leaders can start the journey now.

So, how does one lead oneself?

A simple yet very effective framework for self-leadership includes three steps

  1. Cultivating a deep understanding of who you are, your strengths, your styles of communication, learning, performance, and productivity

  2. Envisioning who you aspire to be, and articulating it with clarity (

  3. Managing your energy and resources to create the best environment that will help you get there.

What I love about this framework is that it can be used by anyone regardless of their career level. Whether you are just starting out your career or your are an advance leader, I believe that successful professionals are always learning and there is always something higher they aspire to.

In the meantime, I am curious and would love to hear what self-leadership means to you and what questions this framework sparks.

Stay tuned and never stop learning!

Ps: This is blog 1 of self-leadership series where we will be sharing series of articles on self-leadership to expand on this framework, share resources, and take you on step by step journey to self-leadership.
